Foam Roller Benefits Cellulite. True or False?

There happens to be a significant amount of misconceptions out there about whether or not a foam roller benefits cellulite. Well, I’m here to clear these misconceptions up. When I first heard of this idea, that foam rollers can actually help rid oneself of cellulite, I admit I was skeptical. And for good reason.

I imagine people thinking that perhaps this idea is synonymous with rolling out pizza dough in some way. As if you can simply roll out the adipose tissue and spread it out in the body. I’m pretty confident in my readers that I don’t have to explain that one. Now with that silly misconception out of the way, let me explain to you just why a foam roller benefits cellulite the same way that a powerlifting routine will build your endurance and VO2max (Hint hint! It won’t).




This idea that using a foam roller can rid your body of fat, or at least decrease it doesn’t make too much sense. I feel as though that the same people who disagree with me are the same one’s who advocate that “spot training” is in fact a real thing. Don’t make me laugh.

If you’re unaware, spot training means that you train a specific body part in an attempt to “lean out” that area. A perfect example of this is when someone does hundreds of push ups thinking that by specifically training the abs and… umm… sweating, that they’ll actually attain leaner looking abs. This is wrong for many reasons. Here’s why…

As some of you may already know, the only way you can realistically expect to lose fat is to be in a caloric deficit. The act of performing weight resistance will merely build the muscle underneath the fat.

Of course, this will depend on how you’re training the muscle itself (i.e. powerlifting, bodybuilding, endurance training, etc.). Nevertheless, the only way that adipose tissue will be affected by training will be based on the amount of calories that you burn. That’s it. There’s no magic tricks involved.

As you can clearly see in this video demonstration, foam rollers are extremely helpful. They indeed have numerous advantages, none about fat loss however.

It’s just simply untrue to state that a foam roller benefits cellulite in any capacity. It’s a great piece of gym equipment that works wonders for tight or sore muscles, but it doesn’t do much more than that.
